Open Log - Welcome to the Main Camp

Moments ago, there was an earthquake. You might not have felt it, but it definitely happened. The collapsed tents and spooked horses serve as evidence that something unsettling shook the main camp not that long ago. The soldiers and citizens don't seem terribly frightened, as if they've gotten used to the ground trembling by now, but more than one stops to look toward the tall spires of rock separating the comfortable and well-ordered areas of the camp from a deserted battlefield. It's as if they wonder to themselves whether something deep in the pit on the other side might have caused it...again...

And then they realize that something else has happened.

You are here – or near here.

Prompt 1:

Immediately after the latest quake, people simply appear in and around the main camp. The residents don't actually see it happen, but they turn around to find a person where there wasn't one a moment ago. You might be that person! You might wake up inside a canvas tent, perhaps even lucky enough to be resting comfortably on an unoccupied cot. You might wake up on the open ground outside with an awful lot of gawkers standing around you. Or, you might wake up about ten meters down the road from the gates of the camp, in clear sight of the guards and the tents just beyond them. This is definitely the time and place to start grabbing strangers and asking them where you are, why you're there, and what the hell is going on.

Prompt 2:

Maybe it's not so right-away, but you've woken up all the same and had a look around. Maybe some of the soldiers have done their best to answer your burning questions. At least one thing is clear: the natives all dress in simple robes and tunics, the soldiers in similar plate or mail armor, making anyone in other garb stick out like a sore thumb. The women who run the Teahouse have noticed this first, and are doing a fine job offering the utmost in hospitality to the strangers in the off chance that they're allied with one of the lords of the land. They'll make sure you have a place to sleep, a good meal, and the best tea the Han Dynasty can provide. It may be a bit rustic for some, but it's comfortable and pleasant. Can it be worth settling down here for a while? Or is this place missing something crucial – like the ability to use your magic?

Prompt 3:

There's a lot to explore in and around the Main Camp. The various tents set up on different levels overlooking the middle area are open to be claimed, and some of them look a lot more fancy than others. As long as there's no famous lord laying his head there, why shouldn't you? The central ground of the camp contains the Merchant's stall, the Teahouse, and the Armory, as well as the stocks for the misbehaving. The bathing area is downstream from everything else, where the river passes under the rocks and empties out onto the plain beyond. There's a few areas of interest outside the camp perimeter, too, and none of the guards are stopping you from going out there. The main road looks well-traveled and vanishes eastward into the distance across rolling plains. On the west side there are high cliffs of cooled lava separating the camp from the former battleground where the Hydra was destroyed. It's rocky and perilous ground, but the adventurous can climb down winding, crumbling paths into a deep crevasse. There doesn't appear to be anything down here, but those of a magical or mystical inclination will sense the lingering aftereffects of great power.

If one were to travel a short distance northward, they'll find the Wuzhang Plains standing quiet and empty, the fortifications left in whatever half-damaged state they were in from the last battle waged here. There is also a temple along the southern ridge, looking decidedly like it doesn't belong there with more traces of mystical energy at its center. Here, the wayward traveler will be beset by small units of spindly, gray-skinned soldiers bearing spears and swords, no more than half a dozen at a time.

Prompt 4: Wildcard

Whatever floats your boat or isn't covered above! Refer to the Arrival page for details of what is and isn't to be found in the Main Camp.

In time, the Merchant makes an announcement. Not long after the Great Cataclysm, some of the mystic soldiers now guarding the main camp arrived with mirrors they claim to have enchanted so that the scattered warlords can speak to each other from a distance. He is under obligation to give one to anyone who asks, and suggests that they may try it out whenever they have the courage to do so.

[not yet anyway...

Zoro huffs a chuckle under his breath and raps his knuckles against Sanji's arm. Yeah you have.
] It'll do. Yeah, I'll stake it out for us.

[all things considered he trusts the cook entirely on the subject of food, and though he'd never admit it, he was getting kind of hungry. He ducks fully in, sets his swords aside, and promptly flops onto a cot, which creaks a little but holds his weight.] ...shit, yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Go on, cook, take your time. I'll be here.

[passed the fuck out, no less]

[Sanji just snorts lightly as he watches the big, dumb oaf make himself comfortable on the shitty cot before he turns to head off.]

Alright. Won't be long.

[Well, not too long. But Zoro's sleeping anyway so it's fine.

He spends some time checking out the rest of the camp, poking his head into the Teahouse (and likely terrorizing the women there a bit) and noting where the Armory is. He talks to the Merchant, too, which is handy because hey! Now he's got some weird mirrors for the two of them.

Eventually he makes it back to the tent, arms laden with plates full of rice and meat which may or may not be pork. He scored some meat buns from the Merchant, as well, and he's got two cups of...alcohol. Some kind of wine, they said, which Zoro is just gonna have to deal with for now.

Zoro, who is still passed the fuck out on his cot. Sanji gives him a not-super-gentle foot nudge to hopefully jostle him awake.]

Oi.

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-23 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[fortunately, he's a light enough sleeper when he wants to be, so it doesn't take dumping him out of the cot to wake him up. He comes to with a little grunt and squints up. Now that is a sight for sore eyes.]

Nice timing.

[he's on his feet and heading over to grab whatever he can so Sanji can unload, like, oh, maybe the cups. Look at the nice mat on the floor, perfect place for a picnic]

Looks like they weren't kidding about making sure we get what we need. Smells great.
serving_love: (talking)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-23 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt they'll feed us long for free.

[He drops down onto the mat, sitting cross-legged, then holds one of the plates out for Zoro.]

But it'll do for now. Found a Teahouse, too. And a guy selling shit.
yourotherleft: (Default)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-23 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, we don't need it for long before you start getting in there and showing them how it's done.

[or they head out on a journey, whatever! Zoro sniffs the contents of his cup in interest and sips it, and then juggles things around to trade the other cup for a plate.]

A guy? What's he got, anything interesting?
serving_love: (that's right)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-23 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Can't help smirking a bit at that, especially since it sounds dangerously close to being a compliment.]

Guess I could demonstrate a thing or two.

[He digs a hand into his pocket at Zoro's question, pulling out the two mirrors. After giving them another scrutinizing glance, he tosses one to Zoro.]

Lotta random stuff, but these were the important things. This world's version of a phone, I guess. Or a den-den mushi. He gave 'em to me for free.

[Peers at his own again.]

Supposedly they're magical or something.
yourotherleft: (haki ping)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-23 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
[it dangerously was! Is. Oops.

Zoro sticks his chopsticks in his mouth in order to one-handed-grab the mirror before it can hit the ground
]

Magic, huh?

[he looks into it, but as long as no one else is currently using it, he just shrugs and sticks it in his haramaki]

Yeah, all right, whatever. Guess that means if we go roaming, they want us to kinda stay in touch or something. Not that it's gonna stop me. I want to find the ocean.

[and Robin, and eventually there'll be a special crewmate waiting for them somewhere...]

Although. The colony, they said they'd send us home when they 'fixed' everything, whatever that meant. Wonder what we gotta to do get home from here.
serving_love: (more talking)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-23 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
[EVENTUALLY. And yes Robin-chwaaaaaaan~~

Sanji shovels some rice into his mouth and grunts out an affirmative.]

Yep. Magic. So maybe those guys that locked your ass up really did have some kind of ability.

[He takes a sip of his drink, mulling over that last comment.]

Mm...dunno. Whatever they tell us, could just be more bullshit. [Scowls.] Bouncing from one shitty world to the next, feels like we're never gonna get back at this rate.

[And then a thought suddenly occurs to him. He jabs his chopsticks toward Zoro.]

Oi, marimo. We sure this ain't another fuckin' simulation or something?
yourotherleft: (deep thinking)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-23 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure. [one of those rare moments when Zoro really reasons things out correctly] For one, I haven't seen a single person I recognize from the colony, usually the unplanned simulations dump almost everybody in. For two, there's usually some kind of weird bullshit in the scenario, nothing nearly so normal as a quiet camp like this where we can get a damn good bowl of rice.

[being manhandled by the guards after getting in some soldier's face doesn't count as weird, he's thinking more like the times they had words hovering over their heads and the like]

And...I dunno. I'm not as good with Observation as you but something about this just feels real.
serving_love: (oh yeah?)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Observation haki aside, that's actually a good point about not recognizing anyone else here. Durp.

Sanji eats some more rice, frowning around the chopsticks now.]

Fair point... Luffy came from somewhere else, too, didn't he? What the hell, how many different shitty worlds like this are there?

[He shoots a look at the entrance of the tent, like he's seeing past it into the camp outside. This place does have a different sort of quality to it. Like it's more tangible somehow, less fake, right down to the air they're breathing.]

Mah, well. At least it's easier to accept this time around. Just get right down to it and move on.

[Getting to skip the whole jarring WTF?! stuff is sort of nice. Also not turning up by himself, that's also a plus.]
yourotherleft: (stoneface)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he did. I didn't know what to think, then, but he was right.

[which makes him right about a few other things which Zoro hasn't shared with Sanji, though his eye drifts to the cook and settles there for a bit while he eats and contemplates. If Luffy was right that they were involved, then his fledgling feelings have a chance. Maybe he should be a little more aggressive about that...

A moment later he becomes aware he's staring and looks away, taking a bite out of the meat bun and then moaning happily.
]

You've got to learn how to make these, holy shit...
serving_love: (blush / eh??)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-25 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Don't think that Sanji can't feel your gaze on him, marimo. Not that he minds, of course, but it does make him feel a bit warm. He glances up at Zoro through the hair falling over his face, but by the time he does Zoro has already looked away.

This dance again.

Shit, it's probably been...what, at least a month, almost two, since they sort of agreed to -- whatever vague sort of non-arrangement this is that they have going. Their whole "see what happens" deal, which thus far has been more not happening than anything else. Zoro flopped on top of him on the couch in the middle of his bout of incurable insomnia aside... And a few other moments here and there.

Thing is, Sanji knows he needs to fucking man up and find it in himself to take some steps forward in this thing. Stop waiting for Zoro to do it for him. He has no doubt that he probably sends off all kinds of awkward, uncertain vibes whenever the other man comes sniffing around, but this is just...so not what he ever expected he'd be getting himself into.

Doesn't mean he's not into it, shockingly, he just doesn't know how to do...any of it. But fuck if the constant sense of anticipation boiling under his skin isn't driving him mad.

It's too bad that his usual move of flailing his way into someone's personal space whilst spewing hearts in every direction probably isn't going to win him any favors with this one.

...

Annnd now he's cringing -- before promptly getting distracted by that moan, once again going warm all over as his eyes snap back up to stare at Zoro.]

Eh? [Oh, the meat buns, right. Sanji nods quickly.] That -- yeah. Can do. Don't think it'd be hard.

[He brings his plate closer to his face, peering at his own.]

They don't seem too complicated.
yourotherleft: (cheery laugh)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-25 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
[damn right there'd better not be any floaty hearts, cook. It's not something Zoro wants, mainly because he associates it with a type of romance he would swear he isn't interested in. Of course, he has his own bullshit expectations to get over, but that's a mountain to climb some other day. He's certainly aware of the slight tension in the cook's posture when he gets too close, or lingers too long, a subtle sign that sends him into retreat, and that's why they haven't gotten much farther than a nap together in the past couple of months.

Why he's thinking about this now, when they've got a strange new world to deal with, Zoro doesn't know and can't say. At least the meat bun is a wonderful distraction.
]

It's so good. Soft and kinda sweet, but the filling inside is spicy. Pork, I think. Try it.

[it's plain, simple food, very much like onigiri, and that's what Zoro likes about it. And, hey, talking about food gets him on Sanji's level, however briefly]
serving_love: (hmm?)

[personal profile] serving_love 2017-08-25 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zoro talking about food (and even trying to figure out what's in it) happens so rarely that Sanji is actually somewhat impressed. He arches an eyebrow, looking slightly amused, and then takes a bite himself and chews slowly with a contemplative expression.]

Mm...definitely pork. Onion, garlic... Think there's ginger in there, too.

[He blinks down at the meat bun, suitably impressed.]

S'good. The bread, too.
yourotherleft: (listening)

[personal profile] yourotherleft 2017-08-26 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[meat buns are where it's at, yo.]

If you pick up anything from this world, it's gotta be this.

[Zoro will simply be content tasting any and all experiments along the way. In fact, he's pretty pleased right now, just sitting in a nice, quiet place munching on simple food with the cook in his presence, like he couldn't have picked a better place to be if he tried. It's most likely a combination of finally being out from under the thumb of aliens who tortured and experimented on them for dubious reasons and arriving in a place where they have a real damn ocean dammit and he's going to make up for all those months of being stuck somewhere that would kill them if they tried to find the water.

Which reminds him...
]

I wonder what time of year it is here. If it's the same month it was when we left the colony. Dammit, if I missed my birthday that's gonna be real annoying...
